Psychology · Nervous System
The nervous system carries information between the brain and body. It's split into the central nervous system (brain + spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, which branches into somatic and autonomic divisions.
Key terms
- CNS — Central nervous system — brain and spinal cord.
- PNS — Peripheral nervous system — nerves outside the CNS.
- Sympathetic NS — Branch of the autonomic NS that triggers fight-or-flight.
Memory trick: S = Stress, P = Peace. Sympathetic = Stress response. Parasympathetic = Peace and rest.
Common mistake: Treating 'somatic' and 'autonomic' as synonyms — somatic controls voluntary skeletal muscles; autonomic controls involuntary functions.
